Geek/CounterGeek – #66: Happy 50th Birthday Star Trek!

Keith spent Labor Day weekend at DragonCon, where he saw an “old friend” of Elliott’s.

You can’t swing a dead cat on the Internet without hitting a Star Wars spoiler, but Keith doesn’t buy that any of them are actually accurate.

Plus, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the debut of Star Trek, Elliott and Keith talk about their favorite Star Trek moments.

Each week Keith Conrad and Chicago’s Top Geek Elliott Serrano debate a controversial topic in contemporary geekery: Kirk vs. Picard? Was Douglas Quaid dreaming in Total Recall? No topic is off limits.

Geek/CounterGeek – #63: A Red Shirt Gets Their Own Show?

Sad news in the sci-fi world this week, as Kenny Baker the actor who brought R2-D2 to life in Star Wars died at the age of 82.

Also, in the Star Wars world, the second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered during the Olympics. The geek world reacted with the predictable amount of joy.

Plus, more details are starting to emerge about CBS’s new online Star Trek series. Most notably, the main character will be both female and not the captain, which will be a first in the Star Trek universe. This got Keith Conrad and Elliott Serrano talking about which Star Trek supporting characters should have had their own show.

Geek/CounterGeek – #62: (Suicide) Squad Goals

NBC and ABC seem to have gone full boat in tinkering with the Space-time continuum with their new shows this fall. Elliott and Keith agree that Timeless and Time After Time both look interesting, but network TV could have done something a little better if they wanted to tackle time travel.

Speaking of television, Disney head honchos are once again dropping hints that there could be a live-action Star Wars show headed to the small screen. Elliott is skeptical, because of the cost involved in doing it right, but Keith may have a possible solution. Also, it appears there may be a figure from the Star Wars prequel trilogy showing up in Rogue One.

Plus, Suicide Squad hit theaters over the weekend. It seems like people loved or hate it. Elliott shared which side of the fence he comes down on.

Geek/CounterGeek – #60: The Summer of Geeky Discontent

Gird your loins for the impending month of nerd rage in July – Which is going to make more people angry: Ghostbusters or Star Trek Beyond?

Plus, adding to the intrigue surrounding Star Trek Beyond, the writers decided to make Sulu gay as a tribute to George Takei. There’s been some outrage over the decision though, from… George Takei. He’s not too happy about the writers messing with an original character, since Gene Roddenberry put a lot of work into developing each of them.

Geek/CounterGeek – #58: Are We Actually Living In The Matrix?

Elliott Serrano and Keith Conrad talk about the reshoots of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

More importantly though, they tackle an important existential question: Are we living in the Matrix? The questions comes courtesy of Elon Musk, who was asked whether or not he believed that we were all actually living in a simulation. Musk said odds would actually suggest we are living in a simulation and not base reality. His argument goes that the incredibly fast advancement of video game technology indicates we’ll be capable of creating a fully lifelike simulation of existence in a short span of time. In 40 years, Musk explained, we’ve gone from Pong to massively multiplayer online games with millions of simultaneous players, games with photorealistic graphics, and stand now on the cusp of a new wave of virtual and augmented reality experiences.

Naturally, the conversation about life, the universe, everything led to Elliott and Keith troubleshooting the Matrix movies. Well, really just the sequels.

Geek/CounterGeek – #55: Captain America Civil War

Captain America Civil War opened over the weekend and made oodles of money. Elliott Serrano and Keith Conrad discuss what they liked in the movie, and what they could have done without.

Plus, in their first “Troubleshooting The Movies” segment, Elliott and Keith take a look at a movie where things got derailed and talk about how things could have been salvaged. They start things off by tackling a big one: Star Trek Into Darkness.

Geek/CounterGeek – #54: Taking Roland Emmerich Down A Peg

Darth Vader’s role in Rogue One appears to be expanding. Will that be a great moment or just setting ourselves up for more prequel-like disappointment? When Vader comes on the screen, do you instantly switch from rooting for the rag tag rebel spies to Vader?

Prince was originally supposed to play Ruby Rhod in The 5th Element. He was on-board but ultimately they couldn’t come up with shooting dates that worked with his tour schedule and Chris Tucker ended up with the role. Elliott is intrigued by the idea, because Chris Tucker ruined that movie for him. And just about every other movie he has been in.

Plus, the first full trailer for Independence Day Resurgence has Keith cautiously optimistic that the movie won’t be a total waste of everyone’s time, but Keith and Elliott both agree Roland Emmerich is a pretty terrible director as somehow the episode degenerates into a treatise on everything wrong with the movie “The Patriot.” And Keith wonders if Hollywood is in a really big hurry to make remakes these days, or if it’s just another sign that he’s getting old.

Geek/CounterGeek – #53: Riker Rides Again?

More morsels are coming out of the Star Wars Episode VIII set, but one thing in particular is causing Keith Conrad some concern and giving him prequel flashbacks.

Plus, rumors are swirling about the new Star Trek series from CBS. It hasn’t been confirmed by anyone officially, but apparently the plan is for the new series have stand alone anthologies every season. Keith thinks this is exciting and could potentially lead to the return of some all-time favorite characters.

Geek/CounterGeek – #52: Did J.R. Ewing Ruin Season Finales Forever?

The first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story landed this week. Felicity Jones plays the main character in this anthology story, and for some reason that has generated controversy in some circles. Elliott and Keith take a look at this issue of gender equality in the Galaxy Far Far Away.

Plus, we’ve reached season finale time again. Both The Walking Dead and Star Wars Rebels left Keith less than impressed and he thinks J.R. Ewing and Captain Jean Luc Picard may be to blame.

Geek/CounterGeek – #51: The Batman vs. Superman Showtacular

Disney has announced that Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg will be joining forces on a 5th Indiana Jones movie. Ford will be 77 by the time the new movie comes out, but both Elliott Serrano and Keith Conrad are giddy as school boys about it.

Elliott has a brand new project that will be hitting shelves at your local comic store soon.

Plus, Elliott and Keith both saw Batman vs. Superman and bother were underwhelmed by it, and yet it is still making a boatload of money. It has Keith wondering if perhaps all of our storytelling standards are just a little too high.
